Beacon of Hope Awards and Marsh Prizes
The Beacon of Hope Awards and Marsh Prizes are run in partnership with the Lymphoma Association. This is the first year that the Marsh Christian Trust has partnered the Lymphoma Association in their Awards.
The Lymphoma Association provides emotional support and information on a range of issues to anyone suffering from lymphatic cancer, and to their families, carers and friends.
The Beacon of Hope Awards and Marsh Prizes are divided into 4 categories:-
Outstanding contribution in care and support
Raising awareness of lymphoma
Lymphoma Associtaion fundraiser of the year
These four Awards recognise people who have gone above and beyond to provide care and support, raise awareness of lymphoma, fundraise and go that special extra mile in a way that cannot be categorised.
The 2011 winners are Liz and Alan Merrick, Rachel Williams, Phil Walker, Mary Walters
Liz and Alan Merrick -Outstanding Contribution in Care and Support
Liz and Alan Merrick have run the Cardiff support group for Lymphoma Matters since 2007. They support the members and have organised some excellent speakers for the group. Sadly, Alan died the day before the awards ceremony, but his contribution to the Cardiff group and the significant difference he made to others will always be remembered.
Rachel Williams – Raising Awareness of Lymphoma
Rachel was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma at the age of 19. She shared her story with the local media and several magazines to raise awareness. She has given talks about lymphoma and helped start the West Midlands support group. Rachel has not only shared her experiences to raise awareness, but has also used them to help and support others who are affected.
Phil Walker – Lymphoma Association Fundraiser of the Year
Phil Walker is an ex professional football player who has organised several football matches to raise funds and awareness. His son Jamie is in remission from lymphoma but Phil has continued to support Lymphoma Matters and this year raised over £20k for three nominated charities.
Mary Walters – Special Commendation
Mary’s husband died of Lymphoma 27 years ago and since then she has been baking cakes to raise money for Lymphoma Matters. Over the years, she has raised nearly £20,000. In March this year Mary herself was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma and has been undergoing treatment. Despite this she continues to bake cakes and help Lymphoma Matters.
