The Thomas Henry Huxley Award and Marsh Prize

2009 - Tom Fayle

For his thesis ‘Ant community structure in a rainforest microcosm’

Tom’s thesis is based on an empirical and statistical investigation of the biodiversity and community structure of ants living in tropical rainforest ferns. At its heart are chapters that combine excellent natural history with experiments and computer simulations to determine the rules that might determine species assemblies. The results are clear cut and beautifully presented. Lost in the detail of the thesis is the fact that Tom learned the means to identify 71 different species of ants – a notable achievement in itself.
