Marsh International Animal Welfare Award

This Award, run in connection with the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA), was established in 2006 and recognises a significant advancement in animal welfare by one of WSPA's member societies.

The 2010 winner is EAST - Environment and Animal Society, Taiwan

EAST has been an avid and exceptional animal welfare campaign organisation in the last two decades. Amongst much other work in Taiwan (see below) and the Asia region, EAST has assisted in significant investigation work for issues from fur farming in China to cattle welfare and slaughter in Indonesia. They are an extremely dedicated, professional and evolved animal welfare organization, who clearly stand out in the Asia and global membership.

On 30 November 2007, a WSPA-led coalition of local and international animal welfare organisations – the Asian Coalition for Farm Animals – presented a life-size pig made of flowers and candy to the San Shia Master Temple in Taiwan, in an appeal to end its cruel Pigs of God contest. Due to the large number of outstanding nominations this year a further four member societies were recognised and awarded prizes for international animal welfare:-

Lola ya Bonobo – Democratic Republic of the Congo
Instituto Ambiental Ecosul – Brazil
BAWA (Bali Animal Welfare Association) – Indonesia
Pegasus – Israel
