Marsh Heritage Volunteer Award

This Award, run in partnership with the National Trust, recognises the contribution of groups of volunteers who work tirelessly for the nation's heritage.

The 2009 winner is Gibside Estate farmers' market in Gateshead

Set up in 2008 by a compact and bijou team of just two
volunteers, the market has since grown into a roaring success,
substantially increasing numbers visiting the property come market
day, often doubling the typical footfall. “People who may not have
visited Gibside in the past now have a fl avour of this heritage site,”
explains Ali Wilkes, Farmers’ Market Coordinator. They also feel
closer to their region thanks to the sustainability that’s been
promoted. “People are now encouraged to buy local produce to
support local traders and to feel much more environmentally
friendly by cutting down on packaging and air miles.”
