The 2013 winners are Isabelle Law and Tom Vallois

Isabelle Law

Isabelle is sixteen years old and has volunteered as crew on the Glenachulish vessel for the past five years. The ferry operates the narrow crossing between Glenelg and Kylerhea on the Isle of Skye. Isabelle spends every weekend and her summer holidays on the boat. She is always helpful and engages with the many tourists and locals who use the service, while she has become very popular with the crew and directors of the company. Isabelle has been interviewed by television, radio, and newspapers to discuss her work and the ferry. She becomes involved in any of the tasks which are required, ranging from issuing tickets to helping out on the boat. She is there in all weather conditions, learning about the vessel and the waters and has been a great asset to the ferry, demonstrating great commitment and passion for her work. Isabelle aspires to be a skipper of the Glenachulish one day and all those who work with her have no doubt that this will happen.

Tom Vallois

Tom regularly volunteers with Jersey Heritage, helping with the tasks involved in the maintenance of the wooden boats of their collection. As well as three A-levels, Tom has gained several maritime-related qualifications and has trained in building, carpentry and decorating. He has used these skills as well as his enthusiasm and energy in his role as a volunteer. In particular, Tom has worked on the Howard D vessel which was invited to take part in the Thames Flotilla celebrating the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II.
