Marsh Award for Volunteering with Platform 51
Platform 51 supports girls and women to change their lives for the better and encourages them to increase their confidence and further their development.
Many of the girls and women who come to Platform 51 become directly involved in the charity and consequently gain skills and experience. The girls and women are given the opportunity to lead the charity’s services and their experiences help shape its campaigns.
The Marsh Award for Volunteering with Platform 51 is awarded to a girl or woman who has made an exceptional contribution to Platform 51 and honours their achievements in turning their lives around.
The 2012 winner is Judith Harmer
Judith (front left) has been volunteering in the café at Platform 51 Doncaster for the last four years. She has learnt a lot about food and has achieved her first ever accreditation, a Food Hygiene certification. Judith has gained so much knowledge and confidence in the kitchen she now bakes her own cakes for the café. She also supports other women in the centre, especially others with learning difficulties, by helping out in other groups.
Judith said "Volunteering at the Platform 51 café in Doncaster for the last four years has been hugely rewarding. I think I have proved to other girls and women that everybody can make a difference. I have learning disabilities so I hope that I have proved to other people with learning disabilities that we can all play an important part."
Runner up Lauren Wright (front right) has volunteered with Platform 51 for nearly six years, since the age of fourteen, and has shown exceptional commitment to the organisation. She has led local campaigns and supported workers in the Kirby centre by delivering mental health programmes. Lauren has acted as a role model to others as she joined Platform 51 as a service user herself and has used her personal experience to motivate others.
Runner up Louise Barwell (back left) has volunteered closely with Platform 51. She has helped other women and girls access services and has raised awareness on the issues that impact women's lives.
Louise said "I feel the difference I have made to other girls and women is that by sharing experiences with them they are able to see that there is an end to the situation they may find themselves in."
