Marsh Local Mental Health Hero Award

This Award is run in partnership with Mind and recognises a group and an individual who are making an active contribution to help those experiencing a mental health problem. The Award is a way of acknowledging local heroes who provide support to their peers with a mental health problem within their community and who work to make a difference to people’s lives.

Nominations for the Award are judged by an independent panel who select a group and individual Award winner.

Mind works to improve the lives of people with experience of mental health problems. They provide advice and support to empower people and campaign to improve services, raise awareness and promote understanding in the area of mental health.

The 2014 winner is The Art Therapy Group - Womenspace, Huddersfield

Group Award winner - The Art Therapy Group

The Art Therapy Group, pictured above, is run by Womenspace at the WomenCentre in Huddersfield. It is a small group which meets every Tuesday evening and organises a range of art projects, from glass painting to clay modelling. The group supports women experiencing various difficulties in their lives, from mental health issues to domestic violence or low self-esteem. It offers a safe and friendly environment in which women can express themselves, through creating and discussing their artwork, and in doing so explore the difficulties they are facing.

This service is very accessible as it is open to all women in the community and operates outside 9 - 5 working hours. It therefore provides support for women who work or have other commitments during hours when most other services operate.

The impact which the group has on people’s lives is summed up in the words of one individual who nominated the group for this Award. She says: “As a person with very little support socially this group has become the mainstay in my weekly life and I don’t know what I’d do without it.”
